Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi, in former times also called Lake Nyasa, is one the largest African Big Lakes in East Africa’s Rift Valley, with a length of 560 km, a width up to 80 km and a depth of up to 704 m. Nyasa means “lake” in the Yao language.

Only Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria have a larger surface than Lake Malawi in East Africa. Lake Malawi’s outlet leads into the River Shire, which is 402 km long and flows into the Sambezi. Lake Malawi is located between Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique.
